Personal Trainer Diploma: What the Word Really Means Before You Pay for One
A personal trainer diploma is a Level 3 qualification, or a package of Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, that lets you work as a personal trainer in the UK. Officially, diploma only describes size: Ofqual uses it for any regulated qualification with 370 or more hours of total qualification time.

The definition
What is a personal trainer diploma?
A personal trainer diploma is the name most UK providers give to the course that qualifies you as a personal trainer. The word has an official meaning and a looser marketing one, and the two don't always match.
Officially, a diploma in personal training is a Level 3 qualification regulated by Ofqual. The Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (610/5189/5) is one example, and you need a Level 2 gym or fitness instructing qualification to enrol on it. In course adverts, "personal training diploma" usually means a package that teaches Level 2 gym instructing and Level 3 personal training together, with no entry requirement. Both can get you working. They are different purchases, so it pays to know which one a price refers to.
The rule
What does diploma officially mean in the UK?
In a regulated qualification title, diploma describes size, not difficulty. Ofqual's titling guidance sets three sizes by total qualification time (TQT), the hours a typical learner needs including self-study:
| Title | Total qualification time | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Award | 120 hours or fewer | A small qualification, often one skill or add-on |
| Certificate | 121–369 hours | A medium-sized qualification |
| Diploma | 370 hours or more | A large qualification with broader coverage |
Source: Ofqual Handbook, guidance on Condition E2 (qualification titling), checked 6 October 2026.
The level number is separate and shows how demanding the content is. A Level 3 Diploma is larger than a Level 3 Certificate, but both are Level 3. The current Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training has 370 hours of TQT, of which 255 are guided learning hours, so it sits exactly on the diploma threshold. The Transcend Awards Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is listed at 414 hours with 184 guided.
Level 3, A-levels and the Scottish framework
Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework is the same level as A-levels, and it is roughly SCQF Level 6–7 in Scotland. A personal trainer diploma is a vocational qualification at that level. It is not a university diploma or a degree.
Diploma vs certificate
Is a personal trainer diploma different from a certificate?
A diploma is bigger than a certificate, but it doesn't let you do anything a Level 3 certificate can't. Providers also use the two words in their own way. OriGym, for example, calls its combined Level 2 and 3 course a diploma and its Level 3-only course a certificate.
The labels can mislead. OriGym's Personal Training Diploma awards two qualifications, and both are certificates: the Focus Awards Level 2 Certificate in Planning and Delivering Gym-Based Exercise and the Focus Awards Level 3 Certificate in Planning and Delivering Personal Training. A course sold as a diploma can end with two certificates on your wall, and that's fine. Active IQ's older Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (500/8820/8) no longer takes new registrations, so you'll also meet working trainers who hold a certificate where newer trainers hold a diploma.
For jobs, the word makes no difference. OriGym's own comparison says diplomas and certificates give equal employment opportunities, because employers ask for a Level 3 personal training qualification. What matters is that it is Level 3, Ofqual-regulated and endorsed by CIMSPA. Our guide to Level 2 vs Level 3 personal training covers what each level qualifies you to do.
What you're buying
What are the three kinds of personal trainer diploma?
Personal trainer diplomas on sale in the UK fall into three kinds: a regulated Level 3 diploma, a combined Level 2 and 3 course, and a branded diploma tier. The table shows how they differ.
| Kind | Example | Entry rule | What you finish with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated Level 3 diploma | Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training at QMU Sports Centre, £1,495 | Level 2 required | One Level 3 qualification |
| Combined Level 2 and 3 course | OriGym Personal Training Diploma, from £1,499. Edinburgh PT Academy, £1,850 | No previous qualification | Level 2 and Level 3 together |
| Branded diploma tier | TRAINFITNESS Practitioner, Specialist and Master Diploma, from £1,049, £1,599 and £2,099 | No previous qualification | Level 2 and Level 3. The higher tiers add Level 4 qualifications |

None of these is wrong. Awarding bodies also offer single qualifications that cover both stages, such as the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training. The point is to compare like with like: a £1,495 diploma that needs Level 2 and a £1,499 diploma that includes it are not the same deal. Cost
How much does a personal trainer diploma cost?
A combined personal trainer diploma typically costs between £1,000 and £2,000 in the UK. OriGym's 2026 comparison puts the average diploma price at £1,963.50, against £2,482 for buying Level 2 and Level 3 separately. That separate figure is its £729 average for Level 2 plus £1,753.88 for a Level 3 certificate.
In Edinburgh, combined diplomas ran from £999 to £1,850 in October 2026. The lower prices are mostly online study, and the higher ones include in-person teaching hours. For what drives the gap, read personal trainer course costs in the UK.
Timelines
How long does a personal trainer diploma take?
A combined personal trainer diploma takes from 4 weeks full time to about 4 months online. OriGym lists 4 weeks full time, 10 weeks part time, about 12 weeks hybrid and about 16 weeks online. TRAINFITNESS says its Practitioner Diploma can be finished in as little as 8 weeks, and Edinburgh PT Academy's course takes 10 weeks.
A standalone Level 3 diploma is shorter on paper because you arrive with Level 2 already done, though Study Active says most of its online learners take 3–6 months. Whatever the calendar says, a Level 3 diploma still represents at least 370 hours of learning. Our guide to how long a personal trainer course takes compares every route.
Checklist
How do you check a personal trainer diploma before you pay?
Check a personal trainer diploma by looking up the qualification behind the course name, not the course name itself. These six steps take about ten minutes:
- Ask for the exact qualification title and number. A regulated qualification has a number such as 610/5189/5.
- Look it up on Ofqual's Register of Regulated Qualifications. The entry shows the awarding organisation, the level, the guided learning hours and the total qualification time.
- Check the CIMSPA endorsement. Employers and insurers expect a CIMSPA-endorsed Level 3.
- Ask how Level 2 is handled. It is either included in the course or required before you start.
- Ask how many in-person hours you get, how big the group is, and how the practical assessment is done.
- Confirm the total price, including any exam, registration or resit fees.
If a provider can't give you a qualification number, treat the diploma as a course certificate of their own and not a regulated qualification.
Our course
What diploma does Edinburgh PT Academy teach?
Edinburgh PT Academy teaches a combined Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Training Diploma that is CIMSPA-approved and Ofqual-regulated. It is the second kind in the table above: you need no previous fitness qualification, and you finish with both levels.

It costs £1,850 all-inclusive, with no separate exam, registration or portal charges, and you need to be 18 or over. Frequently asked questions
Is a personal trainer diploma the same as Level 3?
Usually, yes. A diploma in personal training is a Level 3 qualification, and combined diplomas include Level 2 as well. Check the level in the qualification title, because the word diploma on its own only describes size.
Can I get a personal trainer diploma with no experience?
Yes, on a combined Level 2 and 3 diploma. OriGym, TRAINFITNESS and Edinburgh PT Academy all accept learners with no previous fitness qualification. A standalone Level 3 diploma needs a Level 2 certificate first.
Is a personal trainer diploma recognised by gyms?
Yes, when it is Ofqual-regulated and CIMSPA-endorsed. Those are the two checks UK gyms and insurers make. A provider's own unregulated diploma does not carry the same weight.
Is a diploma better than a certificate for getting hired?
No. Employers ask for a Level 3 personal training qualification, and a Level 3 certificate and a Level 3 diploma both meet that. The diploma is larger, not higher.
Is a personal trainer diploma equivalent to a degree?
No. A personal trainer diploma is a Level 3 vocational qualification, the same level as A-levels. In Scotland that is roughly SCQF Level 6–7.
Can I do a personal trainer diploma online?
Yes. OriGym lists about 16 weeks for its online diploma, and TRAINFITNESS offers a distance option. Your practical coaching is still assessed, so ask how that is done.
How many hours is a Level 3 diploma in personal training?
At least 370 hours of total qualification time, because that is Ofqual's minimum for the diploma title. The Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training has 370 hours with 255 guided, and the Transcend Awards version has 414 hours with 184 guided.
Do Specialist or Master diplomas make me more qualified?
They add Level 4 qualifications on top of Level 2 and Level 3. Level 4 is the highest personal training level in the UK and covers specialisms. You only need Level 3 to start working as a personal trainer.
What is the minimum age for a personal trainer diploma?
It depends on the provider. OriGym accepts learners from 16 on its diploma, and Edinburgh PT Academy sets the minimum at 18.
What can I do after a Level 3 diploma in personal training?
You can work as an employed or self-employed personal trainer. Active IQ lists next steps that include a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy and Level 3 awards for antenatal and postnatal clients and for ageing clients.
