Qualifications
Level 3 Personal Trainer Course in Edinburgh: Prices, Formats and the Fastest Route In
A Level 3 personal trainer course is the qualification you need to train paying clients in the UK. In Edinburgh, a standalone Level 3 costs about £700–£1,500 and needs a Level 2 certificate first. Combined Level 2 and 3 courses cost about £1,000–£1,850 and need no previous qualification.

The qualification
What is a Level 3 personal trainer qualification?
The Level 3 personal trainer qualification is the regulated standard for working one-to-one with clients in the UK. It builds on the Level 2 gym instructor certificate and adds client assessment, programme design, nutrition and the business side of coaching. Level 3 sits at the same level as A-levels on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which is roughly SCQF Level 6–7 in Scotland.
A course is only worth paying for if the qualification is regulated by Ofqual and endorsed by CIMSPA, the professional body for the UK sport and physical activity sector. Those are the two checks gyms and insurers make. Our guide to what qualifications you need to be a personal trainer covers the insurance and first aid that sit alongside it.
Do you need Level 2 before Level 3?
Yes, for a standalone Level 3 course. Active IQ asks for "a suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing or Fitness Instructing" before its Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, and QMU Sports Centre and Study Active set the same rule. If you don't hold Level 2, you can take it first or book a combined Level 2 and 3 course that teaches both. Our Level 2 gym instructor course guide lists the Edinburgh options for the first step.
Course content
What does a Level 3 personal trainer course cover?
A Level 3 course teaches you to assess a client, design a programme for their goal and coach it safely. The current Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (610/5189/5) has six mandatory units:
- Applied anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness: how muscles, joints and energy systems respond to training.
- Principles of nutrition for exercise and health: what you can advise on, and where your scope ends.
- Understanding lifestyle, wellbeing and common medical conditions: screening clients and knowing when to refer.
- Encouraging positive health and fitness behaviours: consultation, goal setting and motivation.
- Programme design and delivery for personal training: planning and coaching progressive one-to-one sessions.
- Professionalism and business acumen for personal trainers: working legally and finding clients.
Ofqual's register lists this version as available to learners from 1 May 2026, with 255 guided learning hours inside 370 hours of total qualification time. Guided hours are taught or supervised, and the rest is self-study. Active IQ assesses the diploma through a portfolio of evidence, and Edinburgh providers add coursework and an observed practical assessment. Some other awarding bodies also set multiple-choice exams on anatomy and nutrition. For a week-by-week picture, read what to expect on a personal trainer course.

Read the entry rule before the price. A course that needs Level 2 isn't available to you yet if you're starting from scratch. Edinburgh College has also listed a full-time YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training in the past. The real cost
How much does a Level 3 personal trainer course cost in Edinburgh?
A standalone Level 3 course in Edinburgh costs about £700–£1,500, but that price assumes you already hold Level 2. If you don't, the number to compare is the total for both levels.
If you don't hold Level 2 yet
At QMU Sports Centre, Level 2 is £650 and Level 3 is £1,495, so the two cost £2,145 booked one after the other. OriGym charges from £649 for Level 2 and from £1,199 for Level 3, which comes to £1,848 separately against from £1,499 for its combined diploma. Combined Level 2 and 3 courses in Edinburgh run from about £1,000 to £1,850. Starting from scratch, a combined course is usually the cheaper route at the same provider.
What the price doesn't tell you
Price mostly follows contact time. The lowest prices tend to be online courses where you can submit the practical by video, and the higher ones pay for weekends or weeks on a gym floor with a tutor. Ask each provider how many in-person hours are included and how many learners share one tutor. Most offer an interest-free payment plan, so the monthly figure matters less than the total. Our guide to personal trainer course costs in the UK breaks down what drives the difference.
Timelines
How long does a Level 3 personal trainer course take?
A Level 3 course takes from 2 weeks full time to about 6 months of part-time online study. OriGym quotes 2 weeks full time, 6 weeks blended and 12 weeks online for Level 3 on its own. QMU's weekend course spreads four teaching weekends between mid-November 2026 and late February 2027, and Study Active says most learners finish in 3–6 months.
Combined courses add the Level 2 stage. TRAINFITNESS says its Practitioner Diploma can be finished in as little as 8 weeks, OriGym's diploma runs from 4 weeks full time to about 16 weeks online, and ours takes 10 weeks. The 370 hours of total qualification time don't shrink on a fast course. They're packed into fewer weeks. See how long a personal trainer course takes for timelines by route.
The decision
Which Level 3 route fits your starting point?
The right Level 3 route depends on what you already hold and how you learn, not on which course is cheapest. Use your starting point to narrow the table above:
- You already hold Level 2: book a standalone Level 3 and send your certificate when you apply. Compare in-person hours as well as price.
- You have no fitness qualification: book a combined Level 2 and 3 course. You avoid a second booking and the gap between courses where many people lose momentum.
- You work full time: look at weekend or blended formats. Our guide to part-time personal trainer courses in Edinburgh compares them.
- You want to feel ready for real clients, not only pass: choose the option with the most supervised gym hours and the smallest group.
You'll also see Level 3 courses called a certificate or a diploma. The name reflects the size of the qualification, not what it lets you do. Our guide to what a personal trainer diploma really means explains how to check which one you're buying.
How we teach it
How Edinburgh PT Academy teaches Level 3
We teach Level 3 as the second stage of our combined Level 2 and 3 personal trainer course in Edinburgh. The course runs for 10 weeks, with theory online and 40 hours on the gym floor at Gorgie Road in cohorts of 8–12.
After screening and the 9-step programme design framework in the opening weeks, Week 4 introduces DECA: demonstrate, explain, coach and affirm. Weeks 5 and 6 cover upper-body mechanics and rotating kettlebell, calisthenics and pad-work practice. Week 7 is business ethics and pitching. Weeks 8 to 10 cover a lower-body matrix of more than 30 variations, the three energy systems and 15 training systems. The course costs £1,850 for both levels, or three interest-free payments of £616.67 with Klarna. If you already hold Level 2, tell us in your application and we'll advise on the right starting point. The full 10-week syllabus shows every week.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do a Level 3 personal trainer course without Level 2?
Not as a standalone course. Level 3 providers ask for a Level 2 gym or fitness instructing qualification first. A combined Level 2 and 3 course lets you start with no previous qualification.
Is Level 3 enough to work as a personal trainer?
Yes. Level 3 is the qualification UK gyms and insurers expect for one-to-one personal training. Level 4 courses are optional specialisms you can add later.
What is a Level 3 personal trainer qualification equivalent to?
Level 3 sits at the same level as A-levels on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. In Scotland that is roughly SCQF Level 6–7.
What comes after a Level 3 personal trainer qualification?
Level 4 is the highest personal training level in the UK, and it covers specialisms such as strength and conditioning. You need a Level 3 qualification before you can take it.
Can I do a Level 3 personal trainer course online?
Yes. Several providers teach the theory online, and some let you submit the practical assessment by video. You still have to coach a real session to pass, so check how much supervised practice is included.
What is the minimum age for a Level 3 personal trainer course?
It depends on the provider. OriGym accepts learners from 16 on its combined diploma, and Edinburgh PT Academy sets the minimum at 18.
Can I pay for a Level 3 personal trainer course monthly?
Yes, with most providers. QMU Sports Centre takes a £200 deposit with a payment plan, OriGym and Diverse Trainers advertise 0% finance, and Edinburgh PT Academy offers three interest-free payments of £616.67 with Klarna.
Do I need to join CIMSPA after Level 3?
No. CIMSPA membership is optional. As of September 2026, Personal Trainer Practitioner membership costs £38.94 a year and asks for 10 CPD points annually.
Can I train pregnant clients with a Level 3 qualification?
Not without further training. Providers such as The Fitness Group say you need a pre and postnatal qualification on top of Level 3. Active IQ lists a Level 3 Award in Adapting Physical Activity for Antenatal and Postnatal Clients as a next step.
What is the difference between a Level 3 certificate and a Level 3 diploma?
The name reflects the size of the qualification, not the level. Ofqual uses diploma for a regulated qualification of 370 hours or more and certificate for a smaller one. Both are Level 3.
